And now I'm pondering whether I should install non-free stuff such as flash and nvidia drivel. I don't need a 3D floaty desktop cube, but I don't know if I can live without watching youtube and other...stuff. I want to be free, but sometimes freedom is boring.

just Debian with a few more bells and whistles. But yes it is good.

But I wanted something a bit lighter so I gave Debian a try. It mostly feels the same. It boots faster than Ubuntu even though it uses ext3 and not ext4. Why is that? Maybe all those bells and whistles slow it down a bit? Ubuntu is more cutting edge and has more frequent releases, but you can do the same with Debian testing or unstable if you want to. Also Ubuntu crashed sometimes when switching between several graphics intensive tasks, I think due to the nvidia crap driver that I had installed which is my fault I admit. Debian steered me to a free nv driver that works better, but doesn't have 3D acceleration. Installed flash and intel wifi because I needed them. No other proprietary crap on my computer though except maybe the BIOS. We'll break free someday though.

In case anyone is still paying attention to this nerd thread, I found an alternative to using flash for youtube videos. Its a VLC plugin for Mozilla. It's foss with a GNU/GPL license. You also need greasemonkey and a userscript called ''Youtube without flash''. Best part is, there's no ''terms'' that you have to agree to, it's free. Now if only someone would write that grease monkey script that would free this page of Elling's posts. Oops, I said her name, now she'll show up...Oh, my wireless drivers are free now too.
