Metaphorical ...eating.here Linnaeus, 15 Mei 12:51
... settle into a home, fill it with ''stuff''. Bobbles and chattels take over, home transforms, becomes a house ... need more space to house decorations of status, flights of fancy run-amuck. New home ... signature renovations ... absolutely essential, fills up, stuff closes in, house too small, need a bigger one to house belongings. Throw out some old stuff, replace it with new stuff ... where is home? ... moving up the food chain domestically

 Nothing.
meta-fish-ical Jo-Anne, 05 Aug 10:33
status is detatchment from upward (or downward) mobility and ownership - move up the food chain - renovate with minimilism - if it fits keep it - adjust to the size of the house - nothing is essential - collect space not bobbles and chattles

Epilogue Linnaeus, 13 Mei 18:32
Last Saturday unfolded in a way beyond expectation, in which I met with a truly interesting bug, a kind and generous bug with a keen sense of humour, a warm and welcoming smile and talent to spare in his field. You meet those who ''say'' they are knowledgeable in a certain area, and then there are those who ''know'' and have done the homework ... this bug was of the latter distinction. Chatted in a cafe for a while, walked about and visited. Nothing rhetorical about his questions; he asked because he was interested, and he listened to my answers in an easy deferential manner.

 Linnaeus.
... Linnaeus, 13 Mei 18:32
In the late afternoon, had supper with another of our ''tribe'' whose warmth of welcome was only rivalled to the warmth of her smile, and the compassion that shone from youthful hazel-green eyes. We three were amongst friends, and it was wonderful. 'Til late into the night we wreaked a playful havoc on the Sink, and laughed at our own silliness .. children of middle age, and not the redundant children of adulthood (after Geisel).

 Linnaeus.
On Sunday ... Linnaeus, 13 Mei 18:45
the preempted trip to the beach of a few days earlier took place ... Zandvoort aan Zee ... a crisp, but balmy onshore wind, and plenty of sunshine. The canine member of our party had had enough of playing fetch the ball from the sea, so the ersatz canadian retriever rolled up his pantlegs and waded to above the knees to perform said task. To my surprise, the water was quite warm, much warmer than the waters off Nova Scotia, perhaps even in late July or August (the Gulf Stream overshoots this area). Leisurely stroll along the strand, to a point where you could join up with sand dunes and marram (a pallindrome!!) grass. In the late afternoon, three sunscorched faces and a salt bleached dog returned to the station for a sleepy train ride home to A'dam.

 Linnaeus.
Last day ... Linnaeus, 13 Mei 18:59
... up early, bags packed, breakfast and out for a quick stroll of the streets in and around the Weteringschaans and the Vijzelgracht. They are building a metro in this area beneath the V'gracht and have dammed the canals in the immediate area to accommodate excavation. In one of the sequestered pools, created by these dams, a female mallard and her ducklings, trapped by the barriers holding back the waters. My friend and his son had pointed this family out to me on my first day in the city. At that time, there were 10(I think?) ducklings ... on Monday there were only 3 that I could see..alas.

 Linnaeus.
Shuttle to the airport ... Linnaeus, 13 Mei 19:04
... check-in, 2 quick phone calls. The talented bug was not home, but the beaming hazel-green eyed beetle answered. To my delight, she was being visited by a tawny brown-spotted beetle, who had thoughtfully left a keepsake for me and a note of well wishes for a pleasant stay to A'dam - brief chat of thanks with her. So, here I was, met 2 bugs and spoke to another in person...rather good, I thought! My week was full and satisfying. I would especially like to thank those bugs for their warmth and hospitality. I would also like to thank all of the beetles, flies, moths, spiders and bees who were with me in spirit during my trip; whose warm wishes, emails and suggestions of things to do, and sights to see made my stay ... rather unique!!! *muah, muah, muah ... hee.hee

Travelogue - Chapter 2 Linnaeus, 09 Mei 16:02
Walked around town quite a bit yesterday, a little of the touristy kind of stuff, but also through neighbourhoods, stopping in local cafes for pause now and then, chatting with locals, enjoying both the weather and and the general atmosphere of the place. I have been to A'dam a few times before, and each time, I discover something else that I like about it ... stopped in a local boekwinkel, and had a chat and a coffee with the owner, an incredibly interesting guy, well read, funny, well travelled ... had wanted to revisit the Rijksmuseum, however the main building had been closed due to the discovery of airborne asbestos. The Phillips wing was open, but that has been renovated, and the old building of the Rijks is worth seeing in and of itself. Sadly, the whole museum will be renovated towards the end of 2003, and hopefully that won't sanitize the charm out of it.

 Linnaeus.
Following the recommendation of ... Linnaeus, 09 Mei 16:13
... a certain dungbeetle, beloved to the sink, will visit an old and well know pub in the east of A'dam, de Druif ... went tramping around looking for it last night, but was tired and addle-brained from much walking about, and didn't find it. Once I have posted this installement of my adventures, will search it out and give you all the skinny tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow, will meet another bug for lunch ... must say, the bugs I have met thus far have been top drawer, very kind and hospitable, and this has added to my enjoyment of the city immensely.

 Linnaeus.
Tomorrow's meeting will take place ... Linnaeus, 09 Mei 16:17
in an area of town called the Noordermaarkt, which has a Saturday farmer's market and flea market .. fun for poking around. Today's outing to the coast has been postponed 'til Sunday. Tomorrow evening supper with ''bugs'' ... alright!!!

Oh foul conspiracy – an e mail telling me my flight times to A’dam changed. May need to cancel and re-book at later date. Grrrrr…. and again double Grrrrr …. . My directions were a bit confusing I think – I’m surprised you didn’t fall into the canal. In case you miss it again, here is what the inside looks like. Directions were fine ... Linnaeus, 09 Mei 21:46
..and managed to find it this evening, however, on the Rapensburgerplein, yes, right by the canal ... most appreciated recommendation, I might add. While I was there, it was peopled by those who exuded the outward confidence that this was their ''local''. An animated debate was underway while I was there (in dutch, naturally) between those seated in the upper level, and those seated down by the bar. A cooing young couple and I were symbolically, but not actually, caught in the middle, being seated on the stairs that join these two areas. Shan't let the cat totally out of the bag, but certainly a place worth knowing about, with the kind of character and history that Toronto is too young to have ... again, thank you, 'noid!
