Looks like your gearing up for springtime. We had a strange gardening season here; a lot of the flowers that usually bloom in spring are blooming now. If ya hold the Shift key, while dragging the mouse, you can leave a scud of bugs for the spider to eat. I did that, left a couple hundred bugs on the screen, took a shower, cleaned up and by the time I got back, the little spidey had eaten all my bugs! This would be a great game/timer for your little toddlers. Hurry up and get ready for bed before the spider eats all the bugs. A mean parent could add, ''If the spider beats you, he'll get you next!'' (Wouldn't wanna be that mean to my kids) :)

you can tell at the beginning that he that he has some strange obsessions. continuously trying to know the unknowable, trying to obtain the unattainable. then when he thinks he finally has it within his grasp, he gets selfish, and tries to keep it in a cupboard. but the thing isn't really keen on being held captive and defiled, so naturally, it flees. the man spends the rest of his life in pursuit this ever elusive thing, which is really all just inside him the whole time. and that's how he finally gets his very own angel wings. the end.

in the sense that he was killed by his own devices for keeping nature out of his life, while at the same time pursuing it; how his head getting chopped off was an allusion to the introduction. I didn't understand the significance of the other skulls in that pit, though.. were they just saying history repeats itself?

I don't know if they're saying that. The plot has just as many devices as the man does and they allow you to make what you will out of the whole thing. I think that the angel is inside himself and the bird, even the vine, and only revealed itself to save him from his own trappings, to show him the beauty of nature/god. When he interrupts, and tries to have his way with her, she changes back into the bird and he is given one last chance to set her free but instead chooses to selfishly lock her up. Which ends up tormenting him for the rest of his days because he can't enjoy it when it's all locked up. By the way, I mean nature/god in the sense that Spinoza meant, a god that does not rule over the universe by providence, but a god which itself is the deterministic system of which everything in nature is a part, a god that is nature and has no personality.
