For one, most people consider the past to be behind them, and the future ahead. That's our spatial metaphor for chronology, based on our physical orientation and locomotion. Some, however think the opposite way. That is, that the past events of your life (what you have seen, and can remember) are really all you are certain of. You can visualize your past, you can see it, therefore it is in front of your eyes. On the other hand, ones future is not certain at all, therefore it is behind you, and you can't see it. Sometimes a quandary arises with this way of thinking when one seemingly has no interest in ''progress'' or ''moving forward'', because they have already done all that.
