a big reason for the mix up is that the present tense of one is the past tense of the other. example: today i lie on the beach. today i lay my blanket on the beach. yesterday i lay on the beach. yestedday i laid my blanket on the beach.

these may help?! yesterday i was so tired. i wanted so badly to lie down. ''now i lie down!'' i finally cried. i lay down on my bed for a while. i lay there the whole afternoon. my mother yelled upstairs and i decided i had lain there long enough. i have never lain in bed so long. tomorrow i will lie there for as long as i like. i will have lian there for the whole day when my mom comes home from her shift.

i lost my keys. i lay them down in a different place every day. yesterday i laid them on the counter. the day before i liad them on the microwave. i have always laid them somewhere new. i will lay them in a special place if i find them i will have laid them in that place every single day for a year before i lose them again.

''Lie'' is an intransitive verb, which means it never takes a direct object to complete its meaning. Ask yourself: Can you ''lie'' something? No, you cannot. LAY is a transitive verb using a direct object to complete its meaning. You can ''lay'' something. Transitive vebs take a direct object to complete its meaning, whereas Intransitve verbs do not take a direct object to complete the meaning.
