It has nothing to do with pollution. The light of the sun gets scattered by molecules in the air. Blue light is scattered more then other colours, because of its short wavelength. That's why the sky appears blue. The more distance the sun's light has to travel through the atmosphere, the more blue light is scattered, the paler the sky becomes. In Holland, the sunlight reaches us at a greater angle than in Australia, so the light travels longer through the atmosphere. A red sunset is caused by the same effect. All blue light is scattered out, the red light remains.
