everyone thinks I am just trying to be unique and eccentric when I say i have a fear of fish. I wish that were the case, i feel silly fearing something that is so small, no, I'm not going to say that they're probably more afraid of me than I am of them because I saw the look in it's eye when it thought i wasn't looking. You see I knew...
They had bottom feeding fish in my old dentist's office. I would try to play on the floor as far away from them as i could. They just keep sucking and sucking. Going up to the wall of the tank and suctioning themselves there, staring, concentrating as if they could suck hard enough and the glass would shatter and they would finally be able to take revenge on their oppressors.
Years later i got a gold fish. I didn't really want it and my sisters hate me for setting off a chain of events leading to us getting a whole bunch of fish and not really liking them but spending so much money. Then the brought home th bottom feeding fish and I screamed and locked myself in the bathroom. I wish i never won that first fish. i feel really guilty.
i tell my friends that i am afraid of fish and they laugh. One of them pointed out the fish on my wall.I think goldfish and angelfish are okay, they must be because i drew them on the wall next to my bed and I can look at them without screaming. I have nightmares everynight but i think it's unrelated. Possibly due to the knife wielding maniac i drew on the other side.

the fish phobia hate and fear fish, 07 Mei 2003 10:37
The fear of fish is comparatively uncommon i guess. However, since they have a name for it, which is ichthyophobia, i dont think that it is unusual. Yes, people without the phobia will not understand. They see fish as harmless. We see fish as ugly and waiting to get us. This irrational belief however , is not as easy to set aside. While I recognise the problem and understand the fear, it is just not possible to face a fish in live. I often imagine that aquariums may crack and fishes may get me. I often imagine fishes in the swimming pool which sometimes make me splash like mermaids when the imagination takes over. I often imagine that dead fishes may come alive. And the worst is, while i love water, i imagine somehow a fish will appear underneath.

Fish phobia fishbegone, 05 Jun 2005 06:21
Yes, I never ate the nasty Lutefisk at Christmas or the traditional Russian Christmas Eve dinner mom would make which included a fish because of lent. Yes, raised in the Russian/Greek Orthodox Church where there are 3 major lents a year, and every Wednesday/Friday, you eat no meat. Same during the lent. So, fish patties, etc. were a staple growing up. I laugh now, but it does limit life. I went on a field trip to the fish hatchery with my kid's class, and freaked when a salmon that was making it's way upstream to spawn jumped in front of me. I worked as a waitress, and found that I had to choose a restaurant to work in that did not serve seafood. I go chalk white at the sight of a fish on a plate. The list goes on. I basically avoid fish like the plague. Although, as long as my dad or boyfriend by steaks/filets and dispose of the skin, I'm okay. Otherwise, I'm fine...LOL. You are not alone....

Fish scare me too! Ihatefish, 04 Aug 2005 17:28
Wow! I have never met anyone who even KNEW of another person who had this fear. On my way to work this morning, I heard a news story about a woman in an aquarium in Sydney Australia was walking by the shark exhibit when the glass broke and she was surrounded by the water and sharks! Any hope my husband ever had of getting me into an aquarium has been COMPLETELY squashed! I hate going into rivers, lakes, oceans because I'm afraid a fish will brush up against me. I have no explanation for this fear. The weird thing is, I've swam with dolphins before, and they don't bother me...

Well I fear fish too Sarita, 16 Apr 2004 07:46
Yeah fish phobia is something I have very strongly, but it's like yours and kind of sporatic sometimes. But I hate gold fish and those big gold fish with bubbly eyes make me want to run screaming. The sucky fish made me wanna cry also. I don't eat any seafood, even tuna or cheesy crackers shapped like fish. I like to swim though, which is crazy except I just don't look down at the fish because if I see them I gotta get out. And I move my legs a lot so they'll be afraid and not touch me. My son recently started liking Nemo and I was okay with it, but his stuffed animal is scaring me lately. And now I am going to Hawaii and I am concerned about swimming in water that is so clear the fish may be hard to avoid.

I am terrified of fish. I don't know where it came from but I hate them. I struggle to write the word, ugh the horrid things. I love swimming but a sight of a fish makes me wanna cry and get out. A photograph of one would be something I cannot touch. If I see one in a book, I can't pick the book up again. I don't eat any fish/tuna/fish flavoured stuff. Glad to know I'm not the only one scared of them..

FISH PHOBIA isabelle, 01 Mei 2008 18:07
i guess i became afraid of them when i was about 5 yrs old. I remember going on a class trip to a pet store to see the different animals but when it came time to see the fish I became frightened and tried to run out the store. I guess it became worse when my class partner tried to force me to go to the tank by pulling and dragging me over there. My teacher broke us apart and took me by the hand and showed and told me that they couldn't get out to hurt me and that they were harmless animals inside and outside the tank. But my phobia never left my cousin loved fish and decided to get a tank. I hated the sight of them. My uncle also had a Flounder in a tank and I hated the thought of seeing that thing swimming around in the tank. I wouldn't go near it i would slide my way up the wall and run upstairs to get away from it. The funny thing is i'm not afarid of dead ones and i love seafood but it's just the sight of seeing them alive I guess. That really bothers me.
