On Science; the theory of happiness Rohan, 07 Jul 2003 13:51
But Science, just because it comes on the scene, is itself an appearance: in coming on the scene it is not yet Science in its developed and unfolded truth. Hegel, Phenomenology of Spirit

Here's more on writing... Rohan, 27 Jun 2003 01:42
'When words are written, they become, of course, a part of the visual world. Like most elements of the visual world, they become static things and lose, as such, the dynamism which is so characteristic of the auditory world in general, and of the spoken word in particular.' J.C. Carothers, quoted in The Gutenburg Galaxy

Writing Rohan, 23 Jun 2003 00:50
No merely nomadic people ever had writing anymore than they ever developed architecture or enclosed space. For writing is a visual enclosure of non visual spaces and senses. M. McLuhan, Gutenburg Galaxy

''To dwell means to inhabit the traces left by one's own living, by which one always retraces the lives of one's ancestors...Traditional dwellings are never terminated. Houses constantly grow; only temples and palaces can be finished. Dwelling means living insofar as each moment shapes a community's own kind of space.''

''Conciousness, however, is explicitly the Notion of itself. Hence it is something that goes beyond limits, and since these limits are its own, it is something that goes beyond itself. With the positing of a single particular the beyond is also established...''

Is it really possible to be an objective idealist?

To Rohan.
Who knows? Rohan, 20 Jun 2003 08:52
Well, perhaps not, but Mr. Hegel gave it a good try. I have it on pretty good authority that Hegel's last words were: ''Now nobody will understand me!'' Once I was in an elevator with a confirmed Hegelian. It was pretty wierd.

I'm sorry, all I could think of is Aerosmith:

'Jackie's in the elevator,
lingerie second floor.
She said, ''Can I see you later
& love you just a little more?''.
I kinda' hope we get stuck,
Nobody gets out alive.
She said, ''I'll show ya how to fax in the mail room, honey
& have you home by five.''

Love in an elevator,
livin' it up when I'm goin' down.
Love in an elevator,
lovin' it up 'til I hit the ground!'

Be very, very afraid...traces.here Rohan, 19 Jun 2003 03:12
Spirit: You have implored me to appear, make known my voice, reveal my face; Your soul's entreaty won my grace; here I am! What abject fear grasps you, oh superman! Where is the soul's impassioned call? And where the breast that even now had fashioned a world to bear and nurse within - that trembled thus, swollen with joy that it resembled us?

Driven by the ambition of the otherenergy.here Rohan, 12 Jun 2003 05:09
I came across this page while putting off an essay for a degree that I have kept putting off for years now. I read that people in the neolithic era had to work an average of 2.2 hours per day to sustain themselves. Why is it that we feel so compelled to externalize our feelings of energy in ways that are acceptable to the prevailing ideolgy? Most times I like to sit and daydream; it makes me happy. Werner Herzog's great film Heart of Glass explores the rythym of non-industrial time in a very beautiful way. If you are feeling that you are not performing adequately in society, I would recommend that you see this wonderful film.

The intimacy of sockssocks.here Rohan, 12 Jun 2003 01:37
When I first came upon this page I couldn't help feel a little sad for the way that the single figure had clasped his mismatched socks about him, in a kind of Lacanian transfer of love for the mother into the possiblities of socks. At first I moved the socks around, enjoying their colours and textures, but I found the denuded figure so terribly lonely and exposed, so I started to assemble a woman built of socks to fill in the terrible empty space, the absence that invited a presence. I wonder how many other people respond in this way? Does it say something about a)socks b)emptiness c)absence d)mothers?
